House on Stilts

Residential | Architecture & Interiors | 1,630 SqFT | KOTAGIRI, TAMIL NAD

Kotagiri, the quintessential plantation hill station, surrounded by tea estates offers plenty of opportunities for trekkers, climbers and the tea-totters. We were to create cottages catering to these travellers by conceiving a unit that can be erected in numbers on diverse terrain. Our solution was pre-engineered structures in steel, keeping in mind the unpredictable local labor; more so on stilts, which can respond to the uneven terrain.

The tea cottage was conceived as a rectangular box on steel columns. The box was defined by two parallel local stonewalls and a glass envelope, while the roof is lifted off the structure optimising the intake of sun. The structure is wrapped in a layer of wooden louvered sliding folding shutters; creating the possibility of seamless visual, partial visual and complete privacy when required.
